Therapy for children suffering from cerebral palsy (brain damage)

Most often, cerebral palsy is a brain-damage acquired at birth. Depending on the location of the affected centres of the brain, the dysfunctions may vary. Depending on the dysfunction, the therapy concept always has to be individually adjusted.

The most frequent appearing problems are:

  1. Dysfunction of the skeletal muscles: Due to a dysfunction of the coordination, the children can not carry out normal movements.

  2. Dysfunction of the muscle tone: Either the tonicity of the muscles is too high (spasticity) or too low (floppy).

  3. Dysfunction of coordination& displacement of equilibrium

  4. Speech disorders

  5. Mental Retardation

  6. Epilepsy

The dysfunctions listed above don`t nesseseraly have to be definite, as they may vary individually.

The treatment consists of the following means of therapy:

  1. Physiotherapy/ Occupational therapy

  2. Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs

  3. Homoeopathy

  4. Supply of assistive devices

When it comes to a complexity of disorders such as in the case of cerebral palsy, it is very important to not fully concentrate on one single therapy method. Because only a specific combination of different therapies can lead to successfulness.

In case of decent dysfunctions, a normalisation of kinetic behaviour may be achieved and hence the therapy is completed. But in most cases, the dysfunctions are usually very distinctive, hence literally speaking of „a healing“ seems utopistic. One rather tries to achieve an amelioration of the concomitants. Treating cerebral palsy is hard work, it means constantly repeating new movements over and over again. Yet slowly but persistently, an improvement may eventually take place.

Up to now, the MVT has been able to achieve elementary improvements for the patients.

On the one hand, it is important to reach out for the best possible, which can be achieved through continuous work and on the other hand, accepting the inimitability of each and every child and giving it the necessary room for development and discovery of it’s own body.
